This Easter was truly something special for everyone at Diverse Little Colours. It was one of those days where the whole community came together. The staff, the volunteers, the residents, the family members and the wonderful music students who joined us all became part of the celebration. It felt like a shared moment of joy, connection and colour.
We were invited to Willows House in Southall, a small and cosy care home with a warm, family centred atmosphere. The staff are always welcoming and the residents are full of personality. We have delivered workshops there before, and this time they were especially keen for us to return for an Easter special.
There were sixteen residents, ten staff members, several family members and two talented music students who joined us for this intergenerational event. We arrived with our music system, maracas and a playlist that blended Easter and Vaisakhi, a beautiful mix of English favourites and uplifting Bollywood tunes. The moment the music began, the energy in the room lifted. Residents were dancing in their chairs, staff joined in with huge smiles and the students blended into the rhythm of the afternoon.
After around forty five minutes of chair based exercise and dance, the music students took the lead. They played the flute and then began to sing, and the room fell into a gentle hush. The residents were captivated by their voices. Slowly, people began to join in, humming, singing and tapping along, and suddenly we had a room full of shared sound and shared spirit. It was a true intergenerational moment with children and elders connecting through music, movement and joy.
The feedback afterwards was incredibly heartwarming. Residents told us how much they enjoyed the music and how special it felt to celebrate together. Staff shared how uplifting the session was for everyone. The music students said they felt honoured to be part of such a meaningful afternoon.
It was one of those days that reminds us why community matters, and why creativity, culture and connection can bring so much light into a room.
